Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS)

CAS at West Island School aims to provide a holistic education to develop passions, strengthen personal and interpersonal learning and encourage meaningful reflection of students through a broad spectrum of inter, extra and co-curricular activities. In our CAS Programme, students are able to experience a diverse range of activities beyond the classroom that can be personalised to individual interests, talents and abilities.

Creativity empowers students to explore original ideas and express themselves. It draws from their talents, interests, passions, emotions, and imagination—offering limitless possibilities for expression. This can include visual and performing arts, digital design, writing, film, culinary arts, crafts, and more. Students are encouraged to move beyond routine thinking and embrace fresh, innovative perspectives.

Activity encourages students to develop lifelong habits that support physical wellbeing. Activities may include individual or team sports, dance, fitness training, outdoor recreation, and other forms of purposeful physical exertion. Students are guided to participate regularly and at a suitable level to ensure both challenge and personal growth.

Service encourages students to recognise their ability to make a meaningful impact on their communities and the wider world. Through service experiences, students develop personal and social skills such as decision-making, problem-solving, initiative and accountability. Service is often considered one of the most transformative aspects of CAS, fostering self-awareness, meaningful connections and a deeper understanding of global perspectives.

In the IB Middle Years Programme (IB MYP), Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) is referred to as Service Learning. Horizons Week

Horizons Week is an exciting opportunity for students to learn in non-traditional settings beyond the classroom. Every trip during Horizons Week is designed to broaden students' perspectives and enrich their experiential learning.

A diverse selection of trips is available for students and parents to choose from. These experiences have been carefully curated with consideration for environmental sustainability and the communities we interact with. Overseas trips offer distinctive opportunities that go beyond what is possible in Hong Kong, while all service trips reflect a meaningful, long-term commitment to community projects.

Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL) Week

Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL) Units are designed to foster authentic, student-centred inquiry that connects learning to both local and global contexts. These units empower students to explore meaningful questions, build resilience and take ownership of their learning journey.

Through collaboration, reflection and real-world application, students develop essential skills that prepare them for future academic and personal growth. Students have the opportunity to venture across Hong Kong to enrich their learning. The hands-on experiences not only deepened their understanding of the topics but also strengthened their connection to the community and to one another. 

IDL Week is a powerful experiential learning experience that shows how learning can extend far beyond the classroom walls.
