At West Island School, we guide students in making informed choices for higher education. Our dedicated team - three Higher Education and Career Counsellors and the Post-16 tutors - provides expert advice tailored to each student’s aspirations, interests and abilities.
Our Careers Education Programme:
Year 9: Learning for Life Programme - students make their first I/GCSE option choices.
Year 10: Career discussions and initial guidance on IBDP/IBCP pathways.
Year 11: Detailed IBDP/IBCP selection support, careers interviews, and optional PSAT preparation.
Years 12 & 13: University planning sessions, application guidance, personal statement workshops and interview preparation.
We also assist students with competitive applications, unique pathways and less common destinations. Students engage with professionals, university representatives and WIS alumni through Q&A sessions and career talks. Those pursuing professional degrees are encouraged to gain work experience.
Most WIS students continue to tertiary education, supported by resources in our Careers Rooms and visits from university representatives, most frequently from the UK, US, Australian, Canadian and Hong Kong institutions; however, WIS students typically, collectively apply to over 10 countries every year.
Annual Events:
University Fair (Term 1): Meet university representatives and explore options.
Career Fair (Term 3): Network with professionals and learn about career paths.
Coffee & College (First Thursday of each month): Informal discussions on higher education and applications.
